Having made it clear that installation of Vinayaka idols would not be permitted in new places, the city police on Friday removed many idols here which were installed at new spots without obtaining consent.
Fourteen idols of various sizes which were kept at new spots without permission were removed and shifted to the Armed Reserve premises in K.K. Nagar. Seven idols were removed from the Srirangam range; three from Golden Rock; and two each from Cantonment and Fort Ranges, police sources said. The idols were transported in mini goods carriers to the Armed Reserve premises with police protection.
In connection with the Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations, the city police had accorded permission to install the idols in 176 places this year. This was conveyed to the organising committee members at a meeting held by the city police a few days ago. A press release here said police personnel were providing security at the places where the idols were installed.

Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav appealed to the organisers who had installed the idols at various places in the city to take the idols in a procession and immerse them in the Cauvery near Chinthamani bridge before 6 p.m. tomorrow.
