Tiruchi head post office bags BIS certificate

The Head Post Office in Tiruchi has bagged a certificate issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in recognition of its ‘service and quality management system’. A team of officials from the bureau had visited the post office and ascertained the quality of service in services such as sale of postage stamps, stationeries, Indian Postal Order, booking of registered articles, insured parcels, money order, savings bank and savings certificate, and premium services such as speed post, express parcel post, delivery of postal articles, and payment of money order. The other post offices that have received such certification are: HPOs in Anna Salai, Mylapore, and R.S.Puram, all in Chennai, and Palayamkottai HPO.

Bahadur Singh, Postmaster General, gave away the BIS certificate to T.Selvaraj, Senior Post Master, Head Post Office, at a ‘customers' meet’ here on Wednesday.

The function also marked an awareness programme on automated sorting of mail, particularly for bulk-mail users such as BSNL and Life Insurance Corporation. Automated sorting of mails require certain specifications with respect to the size of envelope and address details. It has already been introduced in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. Standardisation of mails is important for efficient automated sorting. K.Raveendran, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, said that the apart from sorting mails on the basis of States, the mechanised system moves the instruments to the corresponding parcel bags.

Core banking solutions is also to be introduced at the head post offices in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthuirai, and Kallakurichi by early next year. Customers opting for the service would get ATM cards.
