DMK Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Siva has requested the city police to withdraw police protection given to his residence in the city in the wake of the students’ agitations on the Sri Lankan issue. In a letter to Tiruchi Commissioner of Police Shailesh Kumar Yadav on Tuesday, a copy of which was sent to The Hindu , Mr. Siva requested that the police personnel deployed for protecting his residence be instead utilised for “necessary and essential works”.
Mr. Siva, chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, said he came to know about police protection given to his residence through the media. The DMK MP said he was not holding a high post so as to provide security to him as a matter of protocol.
Necessity did not arise to include him in the list for providing police protection following problems that erupted between those related to the trouble and students fighting for the welfare of Eelam Tamils, Mr. Siva stated in the letter. Providing protection to a few would only create wrong notion about the action and temperament of the students who have been fighting in a peaceful manner for the cause of Eelam Tamils, Mr. Siva said.

Making it clear that there was no chance of any problem cropping up between him and the students, Mr. Siva said he had been voicing his stand in Parliament on the same objective for which the students have been fighting.
