Three trucks transporting cattle seized near Tiruchi

Police teams intercepted three goods carriers found transporting cows and calves against Transport of Animal Rules at Thuvakudi on the city’s outskirts on Friday and arrested the vehicle drivers.

Police sources said they received information from district-level office-bearers of the Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection Movement and Akila Bharatha Hind Maha Sabha that cows were being transported illegally to Kerala from Thanjavur on Friday for slaughter. Teams from Thuvakudi police carried out vehicle checks at Thuvakudi toll plaza, Asur diversion road, and Devarayaneri.

The team headed by Thuvakudi police inspector intercepted a goods carrier found transporting 24 bovines and eight calves against Transport of Animal Rules and arrested the driver S. Kaalai (30) of Tirunelveli district.

A case was booked against the accused under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 read with IPC sections 428 ( mischief by killing or maiming animal of the value of ten rupees) 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and under Section 96 of the Transport of Animal Rules. Two other teams intercepted a couple of goods carriers at Asur Diversion road and Devarayaneri and seized the vehicles carrying cattle.
