Tangedco seeks Rs.230 cr. for new scheme

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has sought Rs.230 crore for tackling low-voltage problem in all town panchayats of central districts in the State.

The proposal, Integrated Power Development Scheme for Town Panchayats, has been sent to the Union Ministry of Power, which is said to have accepted it in-principle. The proposed project is similar to the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) being implemented in different districts.

If the proposal is accepted, all households in town panchayats will get new digital meters instead of conventional electro-mechanical meters. Besides, the towns will get new distribution transformers, high-tension and low-tension lines.

The Hindu that the proposal is likely to be cleared shortly. It would enable Tangedco to enhance the overall distribution and monitoring mechanism of power supply in the districts such as Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Karur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. Besides installing new transformers, old electric posts would be replaced with new ones. It would ultimately tackle voltage fluctuation to a great extent. He said that the erection of 33kv sub stations, in all required areas, was part of the proposal.

If accepted, it would be a big boost to the central districts. It would also reduce line loss to considerable extent.
