The joy of residents of Sundararaj Nagar on the Pudukottai road, who were yearning for a proper road, was short-lived. The first main road that was re-laid hardly two months ago has been dug out for burying pipelines by Tiruchirapalli City Corporation. The road was offering people an easy access to the sprawling Corporation Park.
Locals complain the road has remained open for long. “We were happy when the road was re-laid after many years and damaging it within a few weeks has disappointed the residents,” says a senior resident.
The corporation has taken up the work to augment drinking water supply in the area. The road was dug out in front of an overhead tank with a capacity of seven lakh litres a day, which caters to Sundararaj Nagar, Kesava Nagar, Jailani street, highways colony, Pudukottai road, and Erikarai road, besides the central prison.

At present, water is supplied on alternate days. An additional pipeline has been laid for pumping water from Melur in Srirangam. The work involves a series of programmes right from setting up valves and other technical gadgets. The supply will be augmented once the work is completed. The work has been entrusted to three agencies.
The anxiety of the residents of Sundararaj Nagar and highways colony is not without reason. The work on the drainage on the first main road taken up about a few months ago was delayed for more than a month, thanks to the spiralling sand price and the ban on lifting the river sand.
After completing the digging work for the drainage in front of all the houses on the road, the next phase was not taken up for many days, forcing the residents to make temporary arrangements to park their vehicles on the main road.
