Sudden showers drench Tiruchi

The rain brought cheer to farmers who are about to take up samba cultivation.

The city and some parts of the district received sharp showers on Monday evening, bringing much needed relief from the dry and hot weather.

The rain lasted for more than an hour in the city, catching city residents and commuters off guard. However, coming as it did after a prolonged dry spell the rain came as a soothing reprieve from the hot spell.

The rain brought cheer to farmers who are about to take up samba cultivation. “Though the rains are not too heavy, it will help us take up preparatory works such as ploughing before going for the samba cultivation,” said R. Subramanian, deputy secretary, Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association.

KARUR: Heavy rain lashed different parts of Karur district on Monday, bringing relief to the people and farmers, who are facing acute drinking water scarcity.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Karur town recorded 40 mm rain in the last 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. Monday. Panchapatty and Mayanur recorded 30 and 20 mm rainfall respectively.

Chettikulam in Perambalur district received 20 mm.

A forecast in the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, website said that isolated heavy rain will occur over many parts of Karur, Tiruchi, Perambalur, and neighbouring districts over the next two days.
