Students of government and government-aided schools in the district have welcomed the new academic year with a gesture. Right after the morning assembly and prayer, students and teachers carrying candles, lit educational lamps in classrooms, as a symbolic gesture to affirm their commitment to dispel the darkness of ignorance and spread the light of knowledge.

Students pledged that they would come to school punctually; accord respect to parents, teachers and the aged; keep their classrooms and the school campus clean; be friendly with all children; and participate in all learning activities in order to improve their skills. The programme organised jointly by Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (Education for All Scheme) and the Department of Elementary Education, drew an enthusiastic response from students and teachers.

V. Jayakumar, chief educational officer, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, and district elementary education officer (in-charge), who visited Panchayat Union Middle School, Navalur Kuttapattu, said, “The programme was successfully implemented in 1,342 government and government-aided schools in the district today. We are glad to note that students and teachers welcomed the programme and contributed to its success.” He added that similar programmes would be organised based on important events in the calendar, with an aim to increase awareness among students.
