September 27, 2012 12:58 pm | Updated 12:58 pm IST - TIRUCHI

Beat boxing, salsa, popping, skateboarding, ultimate Frisbee… Workshops on these topics figure in the latest addition to the events constituting Festember 2012, slated for formal start on Thursday at National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi with the inaugural address by ace director Gautham Menon followed by a performance by veena player Punya Srinivas.

The additions this year also include an online photography competition and a fashion show promoting the country’s ethnic culture. The other firsts of Festember ’12 were an open air theatre, Festember Social Responsibility, and the curtain raiser held in Chennai on September 15. The FSR reflected in the ‘Greendeavour Rally’ at Marina Beach to promote environmental consciousness. Under the Gold Dustbin initiative, waste materials from every room in the hostels were collected and disposed. In the run up to the cultural festival, students also visited Synthika Trust Office in Lalgudi for celebrating the birthdays of 55 physically challenged children and arranging for them a free medical check up.

The ‘festival in September’ spanning four days has been serving for decades as a unique platform for students to exhibit their talent in literary and cultural spheres, and compete with the country’s best. Andrea Jeremiah, Suraj Jagan, Agam, Benny Dayal’s Groone No. 3, Evam and Robo Shankar are all set to mesmerise audiences, say the student organizers who anticipate 7,000 student visitors from 120 colleges. The event will be completely handled by the academically brilliant students who rank top in multi-skills as well, excelling in performing arts and music, NIT-T Director S. Sundarrajan told media persons on Wednesday.
