The Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers’ Union urged the State government to take steps for streamlining the functioning of the Construction Workers Welfare Board.
The board should function as a democratic body and should accord due recognition to the AITUC union which accounted for more than two lakh members.
The board should follow the same yardstick for the enrolment of members, renewal of membership, sanctioning the assistance etc throughout the state, a resolution adopted at a State-level office bearers meeting of the union held here on Monday said.

Another resolution referred to various posts lying vacant in the board and pleaded with the government to fill the same immediately.
The construction activities have been badly hit in the State because of serious restrictions in registering the house sites, getting permission for construction of buildings, steep increase in the prices of construction material, sand, and so on.
A large number of construction workers had been rendered jobless because of this; another resolution said and urged the government to check the increase in the prices of construction material.

The meeting demanded the government to increase the pension to the retired construction workers to Rs.3,000 a month, pension to all construction workers who had applied for the same, provision of welfare assistance without delay, and increase in the quantum of welfare assistance.
It was decided at the meeting to hold demonstration in all district headquarters on July 14 to press these demands. N. Periasamy, former MLA and president of the union, presided over the programme.
