State Highway roads in Tiruchi to get facelift

The State Highways department has planned to develop its roads in Tiruchi city at an estimate of ₹175 crore.

A proposal has been sent to the State government for allocation of fund for the project. State Highway roads to a length of 69.58 km in the city have been identified for the purpose. Besides covering maximum available space from end to end, the department plans to cover all aspects of roads, including drainage with cover slabs and paver blocks, at all appropriate spots. The roads will be widened wherever possible. Most of them are double-lane. The roads will be on par with Indian Roads Congress (IRC), an apex body of Highway Engineers, standards. A sum of about ₹2.5 crore will be spent for each km.

“We have identified most of all major State Highway roads. It will be a major fillip to road infrastructure in the city,” says R. Krishnasamy, Divisional Engineer, Tiruchi.

The Hindu that chances had brightened for implementing the project at a stretch. If not, depending upon the fund allocation, it would be implemented in two phases.

Mr. Krishnasamy said 5 1/2 km stretch from Puthur junction on Vayalur road, road between Cauvery Bridge and Amma Mandapam, road from North Gate to Kollidam river bund in Srirangam, road from Gandhi Statue to T.V.S. Tolgate, road stretch between Gandhi Market and Tiruchi-Thanjavur road junction in Ariyamangalam, road from Chinthamani to NH 45 road, Race Course road, road from Kothamangalam to Ramji Nagar on Tiruchi-Dindigul road, road stretch from Chinthamani to Karur road, Grand Anicut road and Khajamalai to Mullipatti road were among the roads identified for development.

He said a number of places had been identified for constructing bridges, culverts and building drainage with covered slabs.
