Rapid rise in vehicle density within city limits reflected in a corresponding increase in traffic-related problems has prompted law enforcing authorities to come out with a proposal for creation of new Traffic Regulation Wings for a wider coverage, and augmentation of existing strength in the Traffic Wing of the City Police. Currently, the six Traffic Regulation Wings at Cantonment, Ariyamangalam, Palakkarai, Fort, Srirangam and Woraiyur, falling under the Traffic South and North Ranges, have a sanctioned strength of 336 including three Reserve Inspectors.
To address the evolving situation, the City Police authorities have proposed formation of new Traffic Regulation Wings at E. Pudur, Airport, K.K. Nagar, Thillai Nagar and Gandhi Market. The proposal also specifies the strength required for each new wing.
Formation of new Traffic Regulation Wings, and augmentation of the strength had become imperative in the context of the continuing increase in vehicular movements within the city owing to expansion of residential areas especially in Woraiyur, E. Pudur, K.K. Nagar and Airport police station limits, say police sources.

On a daily average, around 80 to 100 new vehicles get registered in the Tiruchi Regional Transport Office (RTO) alone. A number of new vehicles are also registered in Srirangam RTO office besides the Unit Offices at Manapparai and Tiruverambur, Transport Department authorities say.
Increase in traffic movements is also attributed to the criss-crossing of five national highways through Tiruchi, which is frequented by VIPs of different categories. Visit of devotees to major temples within the city and those in the outskirts and proliferation of educational institutions contribute in no small measure to the rising number of vehicles, say police sources. Taking into account these factors, the City Police have readied a proposal seeking extra traffic strength and creation of new Traffic Regulation Wings to cover more places to regulate and address traffic-related problems in a better way, say sources. Additional strength has been sought for Cantonment, Fort and Srirangam Traffic Regulation Wings.
The proposal would be forwarded to the State government for its approval.

The sources said 72 fatal accident cases had been reported within the city limits so far this year, adding that more than Rs. 60 lakh was realised as fine amount from violators by way of booking over 63,000 motor petty cases in the last six months.
