Residents hit the road to ‘save’ energy at mini-marathon

Around 1,500 residents enthusiastically took part in a five kilometre mini-marathon organised to promote energy conservation in the city on Sunday.

The run on the theme, ‘Burn Energy to Conserve Energy,’ was organised by 24/7 Headhunting (an IT major) in association with Young Indians (Yi).

The run was flagged off by K. Balamurugan, Regional Passport Officer.

The run, according to the organisers was aimed to celebrate Mother’s Day and to create awareness about energy conservation. T-shirts were provided to the first 500 registrations.

“We need to encourage the younger generation to learn about and participate in energy conservation efforts.

Issues such as energy production, fossil fuels, and emissions are critical to the future of our country,” said Srivathsala Ramakrishnan, operations manager, 24/7 Headhunting.

The run began from near Uzhavar Sandhai at Anna Nagar and concluded near the Anna Stadium.

Winners were awarded cash prizes in four categories; boys, girls, masters (men) and masters (women). There were five prizes in each category – Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000, Rs. 1000, Rs. 750 and Rs. 500.

Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of Police, Tiruchi, gave away prizes to the winners.

E. Suruli stood first in the boys’ category while P. Kasthuri secured first place in the girls category. G. Shanmughasundaram received first prize in the masters (men) and Shanu Khanna clinched first prize in masters (women) category.
