Remembering victims of Hiroshima

To drive home the magnitude of the impact, students collected and carried pictures depicting the aftermath of the nuclear holocaust.

For students in 2012, the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki may appear as just another history lesson. But the incident bears contemporary relevance as a reminder of the horrors of nuclear warfare as students of Sri Sivananda Balalaya recalled on Monday.

Around 175 students took out a rally from the Collector’s Office through Major Saravanan circle, Iyappan temple and Annal Gandhi Memorial Government hospital.

The rally culminated in Gandhi Mani Mandapam with a prayer for peace, songs and speeches. To drive home the magnitude of the impact, students collected and carried pictures depicting the aftermath of the nuclear holocaust.

Though the pictures were gruesome, they were necessary in sensitizing the present generation to the horrendous consequences of nuclear warfare, said K.G. Meenakshi, correspondent of the school.

On August 6, 1945, the nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, followed by bombing of Nagasaki on August 9.
