35 injured; bus drivers arrested

The mini bus that plunged into a roadside tank at Nedumbalam village near Tiruthuraipoondi on Friday.

One passenger was killed and 35 others were injured when a mini bus overturned and plunged into a roadside tank near here on Friday.

The mini bus was proceeding from Ekkal to Tiruthuraipoondi when the driver lost control of the vehicle that plunged into a roadside tank at Nedumbalam village. Since the tank had a good amount of water, the passengers were trapped inside the bus and struggled to come out.

Hearing their cries, people nearby rushed to their help and also alerted the Fire and Rescue Services, whose personnel swiftly arrived to rescue the passengers and rush them to Tiruthuraipoondi GH. Velayutham (67) of Kunnalur died of injuries, while 24 others were treated at Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital.

Tiruthuraipoondi police registered a case and initial investigation showed that two mini buses were involved in a race that led to the accident. The drivers of both vehicles were arrested.
