The Punavasal Consumer Forum has demanded an early meeting of the Cauvery Water Management Authority to ensure release of water into lower riparian states from Karnataka dams as per the tribunal award.

In a meeting held at Punavasal near Peravurani, chaired by the president, V.A.Savarimuthu, the forum wanted the CWMA to ascertain the storage and flow into the dams in Karnataka and release water into the Cauvery as per the tribunal award in view of water scarcity in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

It also called upon the Tamil Nadu government to initiate necessary steps to get due share of Cauvery water as per the award so that the Stanley Reservoir could be opened on June 12 for irrigation.

Besides, the forum urged the government to desilt water bodies in the delta region, particularly irrigation channels to ensure water released from Mettur dam reaches the tail end areas without fail.

Thanking the Southern Railway for completing the Karaikudi-Tiruvarur gauge conversion work, the forum urged the railways to revive the Karaikudi-Chennai Kamban Express from Karaikudi via Aranthangi, Peravurani, Pattukottai, Thiruthuraipoondi, Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.

While welcoming the announcement with regard to revival of the train service between Karaikudi and Tiruvarur, it wanted the running time of this service be the same as before.

As per the proposed time table, the running time between Karaikudi and Tiruvarur has been doubled which would definitely deter commuters from availing this service.
