Over one lakh farmers to get compensation in Nagapattinam

Relief to be disbursed immediately through PAC societies

Over one lakh samba farmers in the district will get relief to the tune of Rs.272.60 crore, said K.A. Jayapal, Minister for Fisheries.

Speaking after distributing cheques to affected farmers at Sikkal on Monday, Mr. Jayapal spoke about Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s steps for protecting the interest of Cauvery delta farmers. He said that the relief would be disbursed immediately to all farmers through the primary agricultural cooperative thrift societies.

Karur

Transport Minister V. Senthil Balaji gave away drought relief compensation announced by the State government for the delta farmers in Karur on Monday. The farmers at the head of the Cauvery delta in Kulithalai belt of the district were declared eligible for receiving compensation.

The State government declared that a total of 13 villages in the district have been affected by drought in Cauvery delta.

While five of the villages were in Kulithalai taluk, the rest eight were in Krishnarayapuram taluk. A total of 304 farmers were declared to have been affected by the drought.

In Kulithalai taluk, a total of 206.65 acres belonging to 152 farmers were declared to have been affected by drought and a compensation of Rs.30.99 lakh was received to be disbursed among them. In Krishnarayapuram taluk, 188.35 acres belonging to 152 farmers were deemed to be affected by drought and they were sanctioned Rs.28.25 lakh as compensation. In all Rs.59.25 lakh has been sanctioned as compensation to be disbursed to the affected farmers.

On Monday, Mr. Senthil Balaji, along with Kulithalai MLA A. Pappa Sundaram, District Collector S. Jayandhi, handed over the compensation to 42 of the farmers from the two taluks at a brief function at the collectorate. RDOs Nellai Vendhan (Karur) and Sivasoundaravalli (Kulithalai), Joint Director of Agriculture M. Deivendran, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies Santhanam, and other officials were present on the occasion.
