The importance of nurses in pre and post-operative care was stressed during a day long programme held in connection with World Ostomy Day, World Hospice and Palliative Care Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Day, in the city on Tuesday.
The programme was organised with the objective of educating nurses about management of ostomy, breast cancer and hospice care. The day was organized jointly by Dr.G.Viswanathan Speciality Hospitals, Dr. K.Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation and Shanthallaya Hospice.
“Nurses play an important role both before and after surgery. They have the ability to prevent complications by closely monitoring the patient for any problematic symptoms,” observed Dr. D. Kaarthesan, associate professor, surgery, SRM Medical College and Research Institute, Tiruchi.

O.Revathy, entrostomal therapist, spoke about the management of ostomy and ways to care for patients who have undergone the procedure.
“Pain is one of the vital signs to be monitored by nurses. Nurses must have the ability to assess and help in management of pain in the patient. They cause of pain will guide the method of pain management,” said Dr. B.Vijayakumar, emeritus professor, M.G.R Medical University, who spoke on the topic ‘pain mechanism and role of nurses in pain management’.
