No dearth of action at sports meet

The district-level monthly sports competition, which concluded at the Anna Stadium here on Saturday, was replete with action.

The competition organised by the Tiruchi-unit of SDAT, featured swimming and athletics for men and women. It attracted over 700 participants, majority of them students.

In swimming, the competition was conducted in all the four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). “The meet, which provided an opportunity for young sportspersons to showcase their talents, was also a platform to identify talent,” said P.Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer.

In athletics, B.Azarudeen of Tiruchi Sports Hostel and M.Monisha Sivakami of St. Joseph's Anglo Indian Girls Higher Secondary School were adjudged individual champions in the men's and women's sections respectively. In swimming, S.Nithyanand and M.Maneesha, both from SDAT- Tiruchi, bagged the individual honours in the men's and women's sections respectively. Two more district-level monthly sports competitions would be conducted before selecting sportspersons for the State-level competition to be held in Chennai.

Dr.V.Maniya gave away prizes in the presence of N.Annavi, secretary, Tiruchi District Athletics Association, and M.Gilbert Benjamin, manager, Tiruchi Sports Hostel.
