A new office of the Joint Transport Commissioner (Enforcement), primarily to monitor and ensure effective implementation of enforcement works and road safety measures, has been created with Srirangam as its headquarters. An order for the formation of the office has been issued by the State government clearly specifying the jurisdictional areas.
While sanctioning 15 new posts for the newly created office, the State government has allocated Rs. 66.77 lakh for its functioning, which includes Rs. 62.77 lakh as recurring expenditure. Among the new posts sanctioned include Joint Transport Commissioner, RTO (Enforcement), and a Motor Vehicle Inspector Grade–I.
The new office will have jurisdiction over 25 Regional Transport Offices and 27 unit offices located in central and southern districts besides three check posts. The Deputy Transport Commissioners’ offices in Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Madurai, Virudhunagar, and Tirunelveli will also come under the Joint Transport Commissioner (Enforcement).

The new office will function within the Transport Department building at Pirattiyur, falling under Srirangam taluk, where the offices of the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Tiruchi, and RTO, Tiruchi West, are located. Enforcement works include checking of vehicles and their relevant records, and issue of check reports. The State government had accorded approval for the new office on a proposal forwarded by the Transport Commissioner. A similar office will also come up in Chennai with jurisdiction over northern and western districts.
The new office in Tiruchi is expected to function soon, officials said. A senior official said land for the construction of the own building for the unit office at Thuraiyur had been identified.
A proposal had been forwarded to the government for a testing track at the Thuraiyur unit office.
