Molecular fingerprinting workshop in Tiruchi

A two-day training programme in PCR RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction) (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) and RT-PCR for medical college faculty and students was inaugurated by Dr. M.A Aleem, Vice Principal, K.A.P.V Government Medical College, in Tiruchi on Monday.

The hands-on-training workshop was organised by the Department of Biotechnology and Department of Microbiology in association with Dr. M.G.R Medical University, Chennai.

“PCR is useful in identifying inherited diseases. RFLP, also called molecular fingerprinting, is used in tracking crimes,” said Dr.S.Selvapandian, professor of biochemistry, K.A.P.V Government Medical College.

Students from Madurai Medical College, Thanjavur Medical College, SRM, and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College participated in the workshop.

A total of eight faculty members and 22 postgraduate students are being trained under the programme.

Mr.Selvaraj from Helinin Biomolecules is the trainer for the workshop.
