Merits, demerits of Bt cotton explained

School students got a chance to learn about tissue culture and its benefits at a programme organised at Anna Science Centre-Planetarium in the city on Thursday.

A. Shajahan, associate professor, Jamal Mohamed College, explained the concepts to inquisitive students at the ‘meet the scientist programme’.

Around 50 class 8 to 12 students from Bharati Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sri Sivananda Balalaya, Ayesha Matriculation School and Priya Matriculation Higher Secondary School participated in the programme.

The importance of transgenic plants such as Bt cotton and Bt brinjal, their merits and demerits, methods of production of compounds through metabolic engineering, and methods of producing synthetic seeds were explained.

Mr. Shajahan also demonstrated the process of encapsulation of seeds to the students.
