The Tiruchi branch of Indian Medical Association commemorated the centenary birth anniversary of noted medical professional R. Ganesan on Sunday.

The event saw members of the fraternity remember the doctor fondly and discuss the need for equality in medicine.

Vijay Vishwanathan, Managing Director, M.V. Hospital for Diabetes, delivered the centenary endowment lecture where he spoke about the prevention of diabetes in the Indian setting. “Although over 10% of the Indian population is affected by diabetes, the cost of treatment still remains very expensive for many,” Dr. Vishwanathan said.

“Doctors must discuss cases, solutions and possible alternatives. If a doctor has been able to avoid amputation in a hospital, others should study the case,” he said.

S. Kanakasabapathy, State president, IMA, expressed his admiration for Dr. Ganesan and how he learned from him.

“Dr. Ganesan loved medicine, Tiruchi and IMA equally. He showed us what social equality was and he was a father figure to IMA,” he said.
