The workers of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) observed fast in Tiruchi and neighbouring districts on Monday condemning the “anti-people” policies of the Union and State governments.
The Left parties stoutly opposed the BJP government’s decision allowing foreign direct investment in Railways, insurance, banking and Defence sectors and the fuel price increase.

Within three months after coming to power, the BJP government had increased rail passenger and freight fares leading to rise in prices of essential commodities and vegetables, the Left parties said.
The BJP was offering many benefits to big corporate houses and was trying to destroy the secular fabric of the country, the parties alleged.
It claimed that the Tamil Nadu government was extending its support to the “anti-people” policies pursued by the Centre.

Illegal sand mining was rampant in Tamil Nadu and grave crimes in the forms of murder, kidnap, robbery, and violence against Dalits and women were on the rise leading to deterioration of law and order in the State, it alleged. The day–long fast in Tiruchi was observed at Chinthamani in which CPI-M district secretary Sridhar, CPI state council member Sivasuriyan and members of both parties took part.
