Jayalalithaa promises early solution to Cauvery issue

Delta Farmers Welfare Association seeks more barrages across Cauvery, Coleroon

A delegation of the Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association called on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in Tiruchi on Tuesday to welcome and pledge its support to her initiatives to gazette the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

The delegation, led by G.Kanagasabai, president, and S.Ranganathan, secretary of the association, met Ms.Jayalalithaa, and expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for laying the foundation stone for the construction of a check dam across the Cauvery river at Mutharasanallur near Tiruchi.

The Hindu that the Chief Minister reportedly told the delegation that finding an early solution to the Cauvery issue was her topmost priority.

In a memorandum, the association requested her to take steps to construct more barrages across the Cauvery and Coleroon rivers. Pledging its support to the progressive policies of the government, the association said it was also taking up issues such as pollution of rivers and environment.

V.Rajaram, vice-president, Gandhipithan, assistant secretary, M.Natarajan, technical advisor, and V.Ganapathy, advisor, Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association, were part of the delegation.

Winding up her three-day thanksgiving visit to the constituency, Ms. Jayalalithaa said various developmental works for which she had laid foundations would be completed speedily.

Later, she left for Chennai by a special flight.
