50 injured in jallikattu

Fifty persons’ sustained injuries in ‘jallikattu’ held at two villages in Pudukottai and Perambalur districts on Sunday.

The event in Pudukottai district was held at Periya Kurumbapatti village near Keeranur, while in Perambalur district it was held at Poolambadi village.

Police sources said 35 tamers and spectators were injured in the jallikattu at Periya Kurumbapatti village in Pudukottai district. The injured were given treatment on the spot by the medical team deployed at the village in connection with the event.

A total number of 125 bulls brought from various places in and around Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Tiruchi and other areas participated. As many as 175 tamers took part. C. Vijaya Baskar, Health Minister inaugurated the event in the presence of S. Ganesh, District Collector.

PERAMBALUR: Fifteen persons sustained simple injuries in the jallikattu held at Poolampadi village in Perambalur district. Six among the injured were spectators, while the remaining nine were bull tamers, police said.

The event saw the participation of 262 bulls brought from various places for the traditional sport and 256 bull tamers. The tamers were allowed in two-batches during the course of the event that lasted over six hours.
