The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Tiruchi, which held its annual Pongal celebrations on Sunday, honoured two persons for their contribution towards Tamil and the fine arts. Held at the IMA hall in the city, the celebration also served as a public contact programme and was attended by over 30 doctors and 100 members of the public.

“While we have been conducting Pongal celebrations for the past 30 years, it is only 10 years ago that we began honouring individuals with the Best Scholar and the Fine Arts awards,” said R. Kalaikovan from IMA. While the best scholar award was given to a Tamil scholar from the State, the fine arts award recognised talents within the medical fraternity itself.

“While Professor K. Nedunchelian received the ‘Best Tamil Scholar’ award, R. Manivasagam was given the ‘Fine Arts’ award. The two awards were instituted by IMA members S. Palaniyandi and R. Ganesan respectively. The evening also included a lecture, ‘Science in Literature’ and a prize distribution ceremony for the winners of an oratorical contest conducted by IMA at schools and colleges in the city earlier on Sunday.
