It was the turn of Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts to receive more rainfall than the hitherto flood-battered Nagapattinam district in the delta region for a 24-hour duration till 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.
Tiruvarur district administration has estimated that 25,000 acres of paddy fields out of 3.62 lakh acres under samba and thalady crop cultivation have been submerged in the current spell of north-east monsoon rains.
At Thiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur district where the highest rainfall of 126.8 mm rainfall was recorded, the district administration has opened two relief centres for providing food and shelter to displaced people. The district received an overall of 464 mm rainfall, and an average of 51.6 mm.

Rainfall was also heavy at Tiruvarur and Nannilam where 54.60 mm and 50.20 mm were recorded. The rainfall recorded at other places were Kodavsal - 36.8 mm, Valangaiman - 35.2 mm, Pandavayar Head - 38.8 mm, Mannargudi - 38 and Needamangalam - 38 mm each, and Muthupet - 46 mm.
Twenty two teams have been formed for rendering quick response, and the public have been advised to contact the toll free helpline 1077 or over phone lines 04366 - 226080/ 226090.
State Food Minister R. Kamaraj inspected Andiyur village in Kudavasal block, and listened to grievances of the public. Accompanied by District Collector L. Nirmal Raj, the Minister also visited Manalagaram vilage in Nannilam block, and took stock of the functioning of a relief centre at a primary school at Mudikondan village.

Thanjavur
In Thanjavur district, the administration has geared up its machinery for contingency situations in the coastal locations of Narasingapuram and Thambikottai in Pattukottai block.
District Collector A. Annadurai inspected the relief centres and determined adequacy of preparedness for provision of drinking water and food for displaced people. The officials also took stock of the availability of sand bags with the Public Works Department at Thiruvidaimaruthur.
The district recorded average rainfall of 29.70 mm.
The highest (taluk-wise) rainfall of 56.67 mm was recorded in Thiruvidaimaruthur, followed by 41 mm in Kumbakonam, 31.70 mm in Papanasam, 30.2 mm in Orthanadu, 29 mm in Thiruvaiyaru, 26.35 mm in Pattukottai, 22.67 mm in Thanjavur, 16 mm in Peravurani, and 13.47 mm in Budalur.
Nagapattinam
Barring Sirkazhi that received heavy rainfall of 62 mm, the intensity was much less in other parts of the district on Sunday.
Officials engaged in relief operations could heave a sigh of relief since as per 6.00 p.m. recordings, the total rainfall in the district was 229.6 mm, with an average of 25.11 mm. The rainfall was 17 mm in Nagapattinam, 15.2 mm in Thiruppoondi, 4.2 mm in Thalainayar, 11.8 mm in Vedaranyam, 29.4 mm in Mayiladuthurai, 22 mm in Tranquebar, 40 mm in Manalmedu and 28 mm in Kollidam.
Pudukottai
In contrast, the average rainfall was only 5.17 mm in Pudukottai district. At the taluk level, Karambakudi received 41.20 mm rainfall, followed by Pudukottai - 20.50 mm, Gandarvakkottai - 12 mm, Manamelkudi - 11.2 mm, Aranthangi - 10.8 mm, Alangudi - 7 mm, Thirumayam - 5.2 mm, Avudayarkovil - 4.2 mm, Viralimalai - 3.2 mm, and Iluppur - 3 mm.
Tiruchi
In Tiruchi district, the total rainfall recorded was only 104.50 mm with an average of just 4.18 mm. Barring Kallakudi, Nandhiyar Head and Thenparanadu that recorded 15 mm, 12.2 mm and 12 mm respectively, the rainfall in other areas were below 10 mm.
