Girl-friendly toilets earn encomia for Rotary Club

Public-private partnership is essential for the overall development as the government alone cannot carry out development or maintenance work, said Collector Jayashree Muralidharan here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the Kala Sangamam, a three-day cultural festival jointly organised by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Rotary Club of Tiruchirapalli Shakthi at Thevar Hall, the Collector appreciated the Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakthi for undertaking maintenance and creation of `girl-friendly toilets' with various amenities like sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators for eco-friendly disposal of wastes at deserving schools.

Ms.Muralidharan said the district administration would immediately carry out the maintenance of all 388 integrated sanitary complexes in Tiruchi district within a month, which are now in dilapidated condition, and pointed out that Chief Minister had instructed to complete the works at the earliest. Most of the sanitary complexes are located in rural areas, she said.

The Collector said that people, particularly in rural areas should be taught about basic civic sense and also about menstrual hygiene among rural girls.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan

She appreciated the services rendered by the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and the Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakthi for their endeavours for women development.

S.Chandrakumar, Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan said that the Bhavan would implement several women development programmes including IT education, fund management, health awareness, income generation skills, spoken English, etc through Mahila Samithi.

S.Balasubramanian, Chairman of City Union Bank, in his address said that this type of programmes would promote our culture and heritage. He stressed the need for women development and literacy.

Rani Muralidharan, president of Rotary Club of Tiruchi Shakthi, explained the objectives and salient features of the Kala Sangamam cultural festival.

The three-day cultural festival began with the `Mangal Dhwani' nadaswaram concert by Kalaimamani Kasim and Babu. `Meendum Bharathiyar,' a Bharathanatyam dance drama by Roja Kannan and troupe will be performed on Friday evening and `Jugalbandhi' carnatic-hindustani musical concert by Sriram and Anuradha Sriram on Saturday evening.
