Two special teams of Tiruchi police have arrested three persons, including an absconding life convict, for allegedly murdering a watchman of a TASMAC shop at Pullambadi near Lalgudi recently.

The trio – G. Naruuruliraj, G. Selvakumar, and V. Selvam – were apprehended on the outskirts of Pullambadi on Wednesday, said police sources.

Naruuruliraj was a life convict, who was awarded the sentence for murdering two women at Alampattipudur within Somarasampet police station limits in 1999. He came out of the jail on a six-day leave in March and had absconded since then.

Kallakudi police had registered a case.

The sources said the three accused came to the TASMAC shop after it was locked in the late hours of January 4.

They demanded liquor from the watchmen, K. Peter (62) and Mahalingam, who were sleeping outside.

No keys

When Peter told them that he didn’t have the keys, the trio allegedly attacked him with wooden logs.

They assaulted Mahalingam when he came to the rescue of Peter, and left the spot.

Peter was lying on the ground the whole night and admitted to Lalgudi government hospital after an hotelier found the aged man with severe injuries the next morning, and informed the ‘108’ ambulance.

Peter died of injuries on January 6 at Tiruchi government hospital. Kallakudi police altered it as a murder case following the death of the watchman.
