A camp to screen children with heart ailments will be held here from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 9 under the ‘Save the Heart’ project.

It is being organised by the Tiruchi City Police, Apollo Children Hospital, Chennai, Common Indians Tiruppur and Lions Club of Rock Town, Aristocrat and Premier, Tiruchi, at the St. John’s Vestry Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School here. Doctors from Apollo Children Hospital, Chennai, would screen children from just born to 16 years old. Those found with heart ailments would be provided treatment at the Apollo Children Hospital with the help of the government insurance scheme.
Children from nearby districts could be brought to the camp, said Police Commissioner A. Arun. He told reporters here on Wednesday that he had initiated the project in association with Common Indians from Tiruppur when he was the Superintendent of Police there in 2010. The initiative had been extended to Tiruchi to help children. Transportation to Chennai for treatment would be free. About 180 children had been saved under this project. Children would be checked, offered medical advice and higher treatment, if required.
Anuradha Sridhar from the Apollo Children Hospital, Chennai, said heart problem of children was completely different from that of the adults. Congenital heart disease, which was a major heart ailment among children, had increased due to various factors including delayed conception and pollution. Early diagnosis was vital, she added.
