Nehru’s remarks on allowing students to copy in NEET triggers row

Former Minister K.N. Nehru has triggered a row by stating that if the DMK were to be in power, students would be allowed to copy in the NEET.

Mr. Nehru, the DMK Tiruchi south district secretary, made the comment while participating in a demonstration organised by the Dravidar Kazhagam demanding President’s assent to the Tamil Nadu Bill seeking exemption to the State from NEET exam here on Monday.

The former Minister told participants in the agitation that the DMK led by M.K.Stalin was the only organisation which could fight for such issues and if their voices were to be heard they should strengthen the party.

“Even if we are not able to secure exemption from NEET, would we not allow students to copy if we were Ministers? We would definitely do”, he said.

“You allow students to copy in Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. How long can we remain honest?” he asked, drawing applause and cheer from a section of protestors at the demonstration in which members of other Opposition parties, including the Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, participated.

Mr Nehru attracted flak from a section of public and netizens for his remarks.

When contacted, Mr.Nehru told ‘ The Hindu ’ that he had made the comments only in a lighter vein.
