Collector K.S. Palanisamy, who is also the District Election Officer, on Wednesday said that tough action would be taken against those influencing voters with cash or kind.
Addressing an all-party meeting convened here in view of the by-poll to the Srirangam constituency, he said no one would be allowed to distribute cash or gift to voters.
The election officials had been asked to take it seriously. Three committees such as flying squad, video surveillance and static had been constituted to enforce the model code of conduct. The political parties could alert the committees or concerned election officials if they come across code violations.

The committees had been empowered to conduct surprise checks to prevent distribution of cash or gift to voters. They would also check up vehicles entering Srirangam constituency limit. They would seize materials being carried without valid documents.
Seeking the cooperation of political parties for conducting the by-poll in a fair manner, Mr. Palanisamy said they should adhere to the rules and regulations stipulated by the Election Commission. All activities of parties such as rallies, public meetings, canvassing, party workers’ meetings, advertisements and other related activities would be closely monitored.
Candidates should obtain prior permission for using vehicles for electioneering from the Returning Officer, failing which they would be seized. He assured of transparency in enforcing the model code of conduct and all steps would be taken to ensure free and fair poll.

Representatives of recognised political parties participated. They insisted that the Tamil version of handbook of model code of conduct be issued to them.
