Major tanks being dredged in and around Kumbakonam

The Kumbakonam municipality has taken up dredging eight major tanks at an estimate of ₹ 8 crore in six wards in the town with a view to augmenting rainwater harvesting capacity.

In fact, work on five tanks had already been completed while the work on two other tanks was in progress. Work on the eighth tank would be taken up in course of time, an official source told The Hindu on Sunday.

The work has been in full swing at Melakottaiyur in ward 1, where the tank, measuring 100 metres in length and 60 metres is width, was being dredged. The embankments of the tank had got weakened and hence, the retaining wall would be constructed for seven feet. Work is being executed at an estimate of ₹ 78 lakh here. The source said that the work was in progress at Ayikulam.

The work on the Sekkankanni tank in ward 25 would be taken up in due course of time.

Works had been completed in Seikulam, Banaduraikulam, Pidarikulam, Bairagikulam and Pachaiyappankulam.

Apart from stepping up the realisation, the tanks had been beautified with walkers track, entertainment infrastructure for children.
