On the charge of threatening a widow and forcibly occupying shops belonging to her

A Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionary M.Mathivanan (46) was arrested here on Thursday on the charge of threatening a widow and forcibly occupying shops belonging to her.

Mr.Mathivanan is the second DMK functionary to be arrested by the City Police this month. Party's Corporation councillor R.Arivudainambi was held a few days ago on the charge of illegally occupying a piece of land belonging to a city resident.

The Fort Police arrested Mathivanan, DMK Rock Fort area secretary, upon a complaint preferred by J.Hemamalini of Tiruvanaikoil. Police said the woman's husband Jayaseelan had obtained Rs.22 lakh as loan from Mathivanan in 2007 for his business. Jayaseelan owned two shops in a complex near Chathram bus stand.

Unable to pay Rs. 2.20 lakh as interest every month and owing to loss incurred in the business, Jayaseelan committed suicide in 2007.

The police said Mathivanan not only pressurised Hemamalini and executed a sale agreement but also failed to pay the balance amount exceeding Rs.54 lakh after asking her to treat the Rs.22 lakh given to her husband as advance. He is said to have forcibly occupied the shops which used to run his party office. Mathivanan was produced before Judicial Magistrate –I court and remanded to judicial custody.

The Cantonment police arrested two persons, including a DMK functionary's brother on Thursday for allegedly threatening a flat promoter to part with money. V.Rajasekaran and K.K.M. Murthy alias Krishnamurthy, brother of DMK's city unit treasurer K.K.M. Thangaraj were arrested. Hunt is on for four others. The police action followed a complaint lodged by S.Meenakshi whose husband Subramanian is into flat promotion.
