Perambalur district has registered a turn around in sex ratio, coming to the rescue of pregnant mothers.
Offences, particularly female foeticide after the sex test have come down, thanks to strict action against those divulging the sex and a sustained propaganda about the State government’s girl child protection programme have all gone in ensuring security for girl infants.
For every 1,000 male children, there were 910 girls in 2008-09, 877 in 2009-10, and 851 in the next year.

A strict measure of registering the details of pregnant mothers at primary health centres in the district, a sustained follow up on the health of the infants was implemented.
In case of abortion, the circumstances which led to the situation were clinically ascertained. Only abortion due to clinical reasons were allowed and any attempt to abort the foetus on general grounds were seriously dealt with.
All these measures protecting the health of the pregnant women and guaranteeing safety of their children resulted in the improvement in the sex ratio from 861 girls to 1,000 boys in 2011-12, to 1,016 in 2012-13.

In appreciation of this achievement, the Perambalur district administration has been selected for the Best Practices Award 2013 for improvement in delivery system ensuring good governance.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa presented the award to Perambalur district administration during the Independence Day celebrations in Chennai on Thursday.
