‘Election Commission says photos of ministers should not find place even in R-Day events’

With the Srirangam by election having been announced and model code of conduct in force, the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) has urged the Election Commission, the State government, and the district administration to immediately stop the government exhibition held in Tiruchi.

In a statement here on Sunday, M. Annadurai, district secretary of the party’s urban district committee, said the model code was already in force in Tiruchi and Pudukottai districts following the announcement of the Srirangam bypoll to be held on February 13.

Code violation

The Election Commission’s model code of conduct had specified that photographs of ministers, politicians, and those relating to party should not find place in government advertisements even on Independence Day and Republic Day. However, the government exhibition in Tiruchi showcased the achievements of the State government, he said. When election was round the corner, conducting the exhibition with government funds to showcase the government’s achievements was unjustified and should be stopped, Mr. Annadurai said.
