City surgeon gets lifetime achievement award

Senior surgeon and chairman of G.V.N. Hospital, V. Jayapal was conferred the Dr. K.S. Sanjivi Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 for his contribution to the field of medicine, in Chennai recently.

The Dr. K.S.Sanjivi Award, instituted in 2004 was named after Dr.Sanjivi, the founder of Voluntary Health Services, Taramani, Chennai, and pioneer in community healthcare, said a release issued by G.V.N. Hospital. Dr. Jayapal was also the student of Dr. Sanjivi during 1955-56. The award was presented by Girija Vaidhyanathan, Health Secretary. J.S. Murthy, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai and Parthasarathy, senior vice-president of TTK Health Group, Chennai were present.

A team including representatives from three Chennai-based organisations, including Voluntary Health Services, Taramani, Ekkam Foundation and Uthavum Ullangal selected Dr. Jayapal for reaching out to poor patients who are not charged any consultation fees, said the release. Dr V. Jayapal has conducted more than 350 free general and cancer detection medical camps in Tiruchi and Perambalur. The former president of the IMA, Tiruchi branch, Dr.Jayapal has organised state level surgeons conference in 1975 and medical exhibition in 1976.
