Cash seized in Tiruvarur

An election flying squad on Thursday seized ₹3.12 lakh from a car at Mukhundanur near Koradachery on Thursday.

Disclosing the seizure to media persons here on Thursday, District Election Officer and Collector T. Anand said the squad was conducting a vehicle check at Mukhundanur and stopped the car. A search yielded the cash, which was being transported without supporting documents.

Strict instructions had been given to banks not to issue loans to women self-help groups till completion of elections. As many as 72 polling booths had been identified as sensitive in the district, he added.

Earlier, he inspected the functioning of a District Contact Centre and Media Centre at the Collectorate campus.

Meanwhile, ₹3.25 lakh was seized from a car at Ullikottai near Mannargudi. The occupants of the car claimed that they were carrying the money from Pattukottai to Kumbakonam to purchase bicycle spare parts. However, they were not able to produce valid supporting documents which led to the seizure.

Similarly, a sum of ₹2.20 lakh was seized from a car at Karaiyur on East Coast Road near Adhiramapattinam.
