The body of a 19-year-old undergraduate girl student, apparently murdered, was found floating in a well at Mangalakoil village in Gandharavakottai police station limits on Thursday.

The victim, C. Aarthi, was a II-year B.Sc. Mathemathics student of Bharathidasan University Constituent College for Women at Orathanadu in Thanjavur district. She was the youngest of four daughters of her parents. Her father is a farmer. Police sources said the girl had left home in the early hours to take a bus to the college as usual.

The roadside well where the body was found is some distance away from her house. The well is surrounded by houses.

The girl was last seen by a villager. Later another villager found her bag near the well. There was no external injury on her body. A tuft of hair, which the victim's parents claimed was that of their daughter, was found near the well. One of her footwear was found nearby while the other was on the leg of the girl. Her wrist watch and gold chain were intact. Senior police officers inspected the crime scene and conducted inquiries at the village.

A police team from Pudukottai district went to the college at Orathanadu and conducted enquiries with students and her friends.

The body was sent to Pudukottai Medical College Hospital where post mortem was conducted. Three special teams - each headed by an Inspector - were pursuing the case. The Gandharvakottai police have registered a case.
