Bharathidasan University will introduce ‘flexitime’ valuation duty for examiners so that they will not have to miss out much on working days in their colleges for timely completion of syllabi.
The move also aims to ensure early publication of exam results.
The concept will be introduced for (all) postgraduate courses and UG Computer Science, Vice-Chancellor K. Meena said on Saturday, at the meeting of the Senate.

The convenience of teachers will be considered while assigning them valuation work either from 9.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. or between 2.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.
While the chairperson of the examination centre will be the same person, teachers can work in any one shift. The university hopes to draw more teachers with the introduction of the flexitime system.
So far, college managements have not extended full cooperation for timely completion of valuation work and early publication of results. The university should not hesitate to disaffiliate colleges that fail to send teachers for paper valuation, S. Ramasamy of AVC College demanded while Vembu of Urumu Dhanalakshmi College wanted the university to secure acceptance letters from the colleges before commencing valuation work.

Responding to these suggestions, the Vice-Chancellor said unless there was effective cooperation from principals, the university will not be able to publish results early. Citing an instance, she said that though the university has names of 116 teachers as examiners for Microbiology, only 37 teachers turned up, due to which the valuation got delayed.
The prescribed proforma sent by the university to colleges, that has columns to be filled by heads of departments and principals, must necessarily be sent to the university as confirmation of acceptance. Else, the university will initiate action, she warned.
Examination Reforms Committee (ERC), the VC said, has cleared the proposal for a hike in remuneration for chairpersons at the flexitime centres to Rs.350 per day, and for examiners to Rs.250, the Vice-Chancellor informed, and assured to consider the suggestions of members for having more centres in order to cut down travel duration. Likewise, remuneration for head of the flying squad has been increased from Rs.250 to Rs.500 and from Rs.150 to Rs.300 for members, she said.
Members sought contraction of the examination schedule, at present spread over December and January; and reduction of the gap between examination for first and second year students.
The possibility for conducting examinations for 39 UG courses and 20 PG courses must be explored, S. Ramasamy of AVC College, Manampandal said.
Referring to infrastructure constraints faced by a number of colleges, Dr. Meena said the length of examination schedule was because of infrastructure constraints faced by many colleges and the general reluctance of teachers to take up invigilation work. However, for certain subjects with more number of papers, coding will be set right.
Dr. Meena said monthly meetings of ERC will be convened by the Controller of Examinations for integrating reforms.
