Anbu Suvar optimising utility of ‘waste’

Anbu Suvar (The Wall of Happiness).

Materials that are otherwise relegated as waste in households and end up in garbage bins are now finding their way to the ‘Wall of Kindness’ (Anbu Suvar), unveiled in the city recently by Tiruchi Corporation.

Much to the relief of the civic authorities, residents are responding enthusiastically to the initiative conceptualised as a platform for optimising utility of old dresses, notebooks, foot wear, and other material.

Anbu Suvar is being experimented successfully at the K. Abishekapuram zonal office. Under the initiative, residents wishing to engage in charity are dropping the materials that they do not require, but will be of use to others.

Ever since Anbu Suvar was opened, it has been witnessing a steady stream of donors. The visitors bring old dress materials and footwear and drop them on the shelves. The dress materials, in fact, are coming in bulk to such an extent that they have to be placed on the floors.

According to an official, Anbu Suvar receives an average of 50 to 60 donors daily. It has so far received more than 2,000 garments since it was inaugurated in the last week of December. Likewise, residents of urban slums walk in to collect the materials that suit them. In fact, the receivers are lesser in number compared to givers. The materials handed over by the donors are piling up, but the shelves are insufficient to store them. “A proper management system should be set up in place to display the materials suitably,” said P. Kannan of Kumaran Nagar, who brought five old dresses to Anbu Suvar.
