The presence of a free corporation mobile toilet unit has ensured that the busy TVS Tollgate junction in the heart of the city remains clean.

The unit comprising Indian and western toilets, wash basin, and a 2,000-litre inbuilt water tank is stationed on the open ground adjacent to the compound of the Tamil Nadu State Express Transport Corporation main depot at this junction.

TVS Tollgate junction is a major bus stop in the city, with people waiting to board the buses proceeding towards Chennai, Salem, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, and so on, apart from the city buses round the clock.

Besides a few colleges and schools are situated nearby this junction, apart from the Armed Reserve Police Ground, Anna Stadium, and so on.

The small ground often made for an open urinal.

To prevent the unhygienic practice of open defecation at this junction, the corporation introduced the mobile toilet unit at a cost of Rs. 4.5 lakh.

This has been well utilised by the people and the area now is clean, say the auto drivers of the local autorickshaw stand.

The Tiruchirapalli City Corporation sources said that adequate water was filled in the water tank at regular intervals and special sanitary workers had been posted to clean the toilets.

This unit is one among the mobile toilet vans procured by the corporation.

For occasions

Another mobile van is put to use during the important temple and other festivals in the city and its suburbs.

This corporation should extend this scheme to all other important junctions in the city, says S. Vigneswaran, a consumer activist of Subramaniapuram.

Apart from this, the corporation has set up ‘Namma toilets’, to check open defecation at two points at Ammamandapam in Srirangam and at Ariyamangalam.
