Tamil scholars honoured

Two Tamil scholars, R. Balagangadaran and Tamizhannal Rama. Periyakaruppan were honoured with an award as part of annual day celebrations of Senbaga Tamizh Arangu at a function held at Srirangam recently.

Mr. Balagangadaran was honoured with ‘Tamizhmamani' award while Mr. Periyakaruppan was presented with the Tholkappiar award.

A citation on Mr. Balagangadaran referred to his active role in the cause of development of Tamil language, particularly his participation in the anti-Hindi movement in the state. He was also honoured with several awards presented by Tamil institutions.

The citation on Mr. Periyakaruppan referred to his stir for making Tamil as the medium of instruction for the pre-primary and elementary schools. He had also brought out research essays on great Tamil works and comparative literature.

Speaking after conferring the awards, senior Tamil scholar R. Ilankumaranar underlined the importance of individuals and institutions in promoting Tamil literature. A lot more efforts should be taken to popularise the literary treasure of Tamil language.

In his acceptance address, Mr. Balagangadaran said that the Central government sanctioned several translation and research projects, in the wake of promoting the treasures of this classical language. He appealed to Tamil scholars and Tamil-loving people to make the most of the Centrally-sponsored schemes for popularisingTamil literature the world over.

Three Tamil scholars – P. Arangasamy; G. Tirumaran and P. Subramanian were felicitated on the occasion.

Rasa. Ilangovan, co-ordinator of Senbaga Tamizh Arangu read out a report. K. Rasavelu Senbagavalli, founder of the Arangu, introduced the awardees.
