A sum of Rs. 35.67 crore has been earmarked for carrying out various activities under the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan in Tiruchi district for the current academic year.
The scheme includes carrying out civil expenditure, conduct of residential bridge course and summer course. Civil works will be taken up at a cost of Rs. 6 crore, the Additional Chief Educational Officer – SSA, L.Augustine Peter Fathima said.
In each of the 12 places where new primary schools have been sanctioned this year, two classrooms will be provided. Similarly, at each of the 15 places where primary schools have been upgraded as upper primary schools, three additional classrooms are to be provided.

New primary schools have been started in one village in Musiri panchayat union, four each in Vaiyampatti and Manapparai unions, and three villages in Marungapuri panchayat union. The primary schools slated for upgrade as upper primary schools are located in Thuraiyur, Mannachanallur, Lalgudi, Uppiliapuram, Manikandam and Musiri panchayat unions.
This year's civil work also includes construction of a room for headmaster in 61 schools. The room could also be used as a classroom. Besides, toilets will be constructed in 84 schools, the Additional CEO said.
Last year, the SSA budget for the district was about Rs. 25 crore. The works undertaken last year have more or less been completed. Only in places where there was delay in land-transfer the project execution got held up, she said.

From this year, the SSA funds will be utilised exclusively for the progress of primary and upper primary schools. Till last year, allotments were also made for high schools which were in need of additional furniture.
Since the Central government has commenced implementation of Rastriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan, the requirements of high school will be fulfilled entirely through the scheme.
