Even as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party witnessed a split, a section of grass-root level supporters and party cadre in Pudukottai were busy on Sunday evolving a forum (Peravai) in favour of Deepa Jayaraman, relative of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

“We are concerned about strengthening the party by floating the Peravai. In fact, we have also identified the co-ordinators for the Peravai,” says M. Mahendravarman and M. R. Rajarathinam, coordinators.

All through the observance of the week-long ‘National Road Safety Week’, the district administration ensured that adequate awareness was created on the use of helmets among two-wheeler riders. Awareness rallies were organised to drive home the use of helmets for safety. “In Karaikal, it is a common sight to see three persons riding a two-wheeler. Often, two-wheeler riders skip to use helmets,” say traffic police sources.

The awareness will go a long way in sensitising the two-wheelers to use helmets. “From May, use of helmet will be made compulsory in the Union Territory of Puducherry,” the source said. The present road safety week was fully utilised towards understanding the importance of this safety gadget. “Further, there will not be any scramble in the market for helmet in May,” the source added.

The green signal for organising ‘jallikattu’ after a gap of two years brought about enthusiasm and gaiety among villagers in the central region. Bull-owners vied with one another in registering their animal. At several places, the number of animals was more than the anticipated strength.

The ‘jallikattu’ organised at Tirunallur in Pudukottai testified to the merriment of the people.

Though the event commenced at 9-30 a.m., the animals were seen being brought till 2 p.m. from different parts of the region. At Manjampatti village near Tiruchi, the bull-owners were visibly happy over the restoration of jallikattu after two years. The strength of animals was so large that the owners had to wait for some time to register their bulls.
