The Yoga and Naturopathy Department of the K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital in Tiruchi has achieved a milestone by treating more than one lakh patients since its inception.
When the department was started in September 2014 at the old casualty ward, it did not have much infrastructure except a few mats for performing yoga. It had then started treating patients with acupuncture. Recently, it added a few more fitness equipment such as treadmill, twister, static cycle, spinal spray bathtub and hip bathtub to offer more services to the patients. Marry Lilly, Dean of the hospital inaugurated the new instruments.
It has now turned out to be one of the much sought after departments in the hospital, doctors say. “We are happy that the number of patients treated at the department has crossed one lakh. Most of them have been treated with the well acclaimed natural treatment methods,” said Preethi Pushkarni, Assistant Medical Officer.

She said that the department offered various treatments including acupuncture, acupressure, magnet therapy, mud therapy, steam bath and facial scheme to out-patients and patients referred by neurologists and others. Patients were treated for diabetic, hypertension, arthritis, paralytic disorders, migraine, insomnia and others.
Dr. Pushkarni said the department received on an average 120 patients a day. Several patients from far flung areas including Salem and Namakkal also visited the hospital for treatment.
“The response was sluggish in the beginning. But, there is very good patronage now. Most of the new cases are referred by patients, who had undergone treatment earlier. The increasing patronage gives us a sense of satisfaction,” she added.
