Over 1,150 students take part in relay-run

Over 1,150 students from the Bharathidasan University and its affiliated colleges participated in a relay-run organised in the City on Saturday in connection with the World Classical Tamil Conference.

The relay-run in Tiruchi city formed part of a series of such events organised by the varsity in various districts falling under its jurisdiction to promote an awareness of the conference. Mini-marathons and relay-runs were already held in Ariyalur, Karur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Kumbakonam, Pattukottai, Orathanadu, Tiruvarur and Mannargudi.

Transport Minister K.N.Nehru flagged of the run near the Railway Junction in the city on Saturday in the presence of the Forest Minister N.Selvaraj, V.Dakshinamurthy, Collector (in-charge), M.Ponnavaikko, Vice-Chancellor, Anbil Periyasamy and K.N.Sekaran, MLAs, and other officials.

The students ran in batches across different legs covering various parts of the city, including Puthur, Thillai Nagar, Chathram Bus Stand, Mainguard Gate, Gandhi Market and TVS Tollgate before culminating at the Bharathidasan University's Khajamalai campus. The winners in each leg were awarded prizes.

Over 3,150 students participated in the runs organised across the central districts, said J.Arul Chellakumar, Coordinator, National Service Scheme, Bharathidasan University.
