A new railway station building for Ariyalur is proposed to be constructed as part of the 170 km Villupuram —Tiruchi—Dindigul doubling project to be executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Government of India Enterprise.
The Tiruchi divisional railway authorities have planned to engage a consultant to work out the station building design with improved look besides suggesting measures on optimum utilisation of the existing area and on landscaping.
Some of the existing old structures in the station's vicinity which have outlived its utility would be demolished to make way for sufficient area. The consultant would be engaged in order to obtain new inputs and ideas with respect to various aspects connected with the station building.

As part of the doubling project, the railway authorities have also planned to improve the facilities in the ‘C' and ‘D' category stations in the Villupuram–Tiruchi chord line section wherever the existing facilities had served its purpose.
Railway authorities told The Hindu here that the tenders were in the last stage of finalisation to lay the second railway track between Ariyalur and Valadi as part of the Rs.1,200 crore Villupuram—Tiruchi—Dindigul doubling project.
The works were expected to kick-start in the near future.

Crucial stretch
Funds to the tune of Rs.60 crore had been sanctioned in the 2010-11 financial year to lay the second BG track in the crucial 50 km stretch between Ariyalur and Valadi.
The Ariyalur–Valadi stretch had been chosen for doubling since it was a crucial one in the chord line section to ease congestion, especially during night hours when rail traffic is heavy and reduce travelling time.
The real advantage would come about once the doubling project is completed as this would not only enable in operating additional long distance trains but also reduce travelling time, the authorities say.
The massive work had been awarded to the RVNL as it was a Special Purpose Vehicle to implement rail infrastructure projects across the country.
