Mettur Municipality raises rentals

The Mettur Municipality has hiked the rent for the shops functioning on its premises in various parts of the town by 40 per cent.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the municipal council meeting held on Thursday. Lalitha Saravanan, Municipal Chairperson, presided over the meeting.

The Chairperson said the rent for the municipal shops were reviewed and 40 per cent hike was decided as per the government direction.

The AIADMK councellor Gunasekaran said that the 40 per cent hike for the municipal shops was too steep and pleaded for reducing the same.

Amutha of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) said that a public auction of the municipal shops will fetch more revenue to the municipality.

Ms. Lalitha Saravanan said that the hike has been proposed taking into consideration the financial position of the municipality and also the demands of the councillors.

A few councillors urged the municipality to take effective steps for solving the acute drinking water problem prevailing in the town. The inordinate delay in closing the pits dug for the execution of the underground drainage scheme is causing much hardship to the local people general and road users in particular, they complained and urged the officials to close pits and relay the roads immediately.

A resolution favouring earmarking of Rs. 2.50 lakhs for the setting up of temporary sanitation, drinking water facilities, dress changing rooms etc on the bank of River Cauvery for the forthcoming Aadi Perukku festival was also adopted.

Rajendran, Municipal Commissioner in-charge, Ramakrishnan, municipal vice-chairman, participated in the meeting.
